Where do I start with the golf? The opportunities are extensive. On the doorstep the first of the two Costa Esuri courses is open and playing well. The greens are excellent and the course is a great challenge, particularly the holes near the river when the wind picks up.
The second course is looking good now (due to open in 2008) and is quite different as it makes its way through the new development area.
There are courses in both Spain & Portugal within easy reach from low cost courses to the magnificent, albeit expensive, Monte Rei.
This page is devoted to the Costa Esuri course plus links to most of the other courses that are within easy reach.
Scroll down the page to the Golf Course Guide to get driving directions to each of the courses. In addition I’ve added a link to a tee time booking service (online with discounts) at the end of this section so you can now book your golf before you leave home.
COSTA ESURI GOLF CLUB
The Clubhouse is literally a few minutes walk from the apartment and just outside is a driving range with excellent chipping area and putting green.
The Clubhouse is open to non-members and serves excellent food (from sandwiches to steaks) or you can just relax on the terrace with a cool drink.
In the background is the 4 star hotel which is scheduled to open early 2008.
Golf Clubs can be hired for about 25 euros a round but in my experience it is the luck of the draw as to what you find in the bag! The first time I had a brand new set of good quality clubs but on the next occasion I had to request a refund as there were no woods and the longest iron was a 5!
The green fees are quite reasonable and there is normally some kind of “special” on such as the Mad Dog - 2 x 18 holes plus Golf Buggy for 80 euros. Great value but somewhat hot - as the name implies this deal is for afternoon play.
The course is a challenge for all standards particularly if you find yourself playing on a day with strong winds.
Off the yellow tees the shortest par 3 is 173 metres, which converted is 190 yards. So there are no simple pitch shot holes!
The 9th is the longest hole at 529 metres off the yellow tees, 560 off the whites so again a real challenge unless you are a real big hitter.

I will be adding my own reviews of the other courses in the area as I play them (and get the time to write!) but for now I’ve added a short description and link to the various courses in both Spain & Portugal.

This GOLF COURSE GUIDE link opens up a site where you can drill down into each of the local clubs.
Simply type Ayamonte in the search box and all of the local courses are highlighted with a small flag.
Clicking on any flag brings up details of the course. Clicking directions and entering Costa Esuri in the “Leaving from” box will provide detailed directions from our apartment.
Here’s the link to the online tee booking service mentioned above. We have no relationship with these guys but they’ve been around for many years and I’ve heard good reports about their service. Their green fees certainly are lower than the standard published rates.
When the pages opens select the date you’d like to play, click on the scroll down box and select Costa de la Luz and details of the available courses will be shown.
